Anxiety, Stress and Depression are natural behavioural responses to stressful situations.

As human beings we can all be subjected to stress and anxiety in our day to day to lives at any time. The causes of anxiety and stress can be many and varied. We all live very different lives to each other, which means that we can have different stress triggers and factors. Stress is a normal part of life and usually we can override the symptoms by being positive and distracting ourselves from the symptoms.

Causes of Anxiety and Stress

Adults

  • Marriage, Separation or Divorce
  • Moving home or work
  • Bereavement
  • Relationship or family stress
  • Financial or work stress
  • A build up of smaller worries and stress
  • Excessive work pressure or change

Children:

  • Parent’s separation or divorce

Causes of Depression

Some of the most common causes may be:

  • Negative childhood or even adult experiences
  • Historical or present abuse or trauma
  • Stressful life events
  • Other mental health problems or physical illness
  • Medication or recreational drugs
  • Lack of appropriate sleep, diet and exercise

Symptoms of Depression

Outwardly, some people with depression may seem to be coping and mask their symptoms very well. Inwardly however, there can often be struggle which eventually can lead to outward symptoms too. Many people with depression also have symptoms of anxiety.

Some of the symptoms for depression can be:

  • Negative self esteem and confidence
  • Self sabotage and pessimism
  • Oversleeping and lethargy
  • Lack of sleep and lethargy
  • Lack of motivation and drive
  • Excessive crying and sadness
  • Anxiety and fear

All three can be interlinked and exacerbate the other so that it may feel like a vicious circle of never ending anxiety. The symptoms can grow and escalate as the brain practices and masters the responses to stressful situations. However, when they are persistent and begin to take control of our emotions, it may be time to get some help. It is important to get the help and support from friends and family if you are experiencing depression. Even though at times it may feel as though no one really understands you, their support and empathy can lead you out of what may seem like a very dark place. Experienced therapists and practitioners like myself can also help you to overcome the challenges of depression by providing strategies and techniques that you can use on a daily basis.

What is important is that we should be able to manage healthy levels of stress so that we can learn, grow and become better people as a result. Although this is easier said than done, it most certainly CAN be done by replacing old negative responses with new calmer and controlled responses. When these are learned and practiced consciously and repeatedly, the new positive responses eventually become stronger than the negative ones. NLP provides strategies and techniques that can help to overcome and reset your emotions in a positive manner. Hypnotherapy is also proven to hep for anxiety, stress and depression by calming and relaxing the subconscious and then strengthening the internal language, building resilience and optimism.
